A multimeter is a tool for measuring, also called a multimeter, is an electrotechnical measuring instrument that can be used for several measured quantities and in several measuring ranges.
📝 Task
"Redesign it!" Electric tool with a display
👩💻 Role
Product Design, Model Making, Photography
Max Stotz
Christina Mayr
In the subject Design and Construction at Coburg University of Applied Sciences
6th semester / 2016
Every project starts with a research about the product. This includes a complete market research: of product classes, product variants, analogies of the device. However, the most important thing is to analyze the task and function of the device.
Function analysis
In the next step, we considered which target groups exist for a multimeter. Which people need this device, how could they look like, and in which area do they use the product. From these three groups, we constructed two personas for which we would like to design our product.
To understand how a multimeter is constructed, we analyzed and disassembled our patent product in detail.
We also observed users in the process of using a multimeter.
We made many concepts on different ideas and worked them out more and more until we finalized our idea at the end.
Thanks to this structuring of the product surface, measurement errors due to incorrect setting of the device are prevented and incorrect use of the multimeter - which often destroys the device due to the high currents and can lead to life-threatening situations. Provocatively, on the respective pages are any information that is necessary for a correct measurement process. So the user has everything in view what need to know about the measurement and newcomers in the field of electronics is the work to facilitate and safety.
Not only the measured variables are clearly indicated but also small warnings
Plus a graphic that simply describes the measurement process.
Additionally, the device offers the possibility to store the associated measuring probes including cables.
For better and easier understanding, we have designed as another small explanatory book with simple illustrations.
